Tour for Tucson's Children
July 4, 2004

On July 4, we rode in the Tour for Tucson's Children. Proceeds from the race are used to buy bicycling helmets for underprivledged kids. Greg and Karen rode on their Bike Friday tandem, and Marlene and her cycling partner for this race (Rich Corbett) rode on Rich's road tandem.

We ran into our friends, Carol and Bill, before the race and Carol took this terrific picture of the guys. Bill is an avid rider (and a fast one too).  ;-) In this year's Tour of the Tucson Mountains race, Bill finished the 58-mile course in under 2:45, for an average speed of 21.2 mph. Wow! Carol is not riding these days but is very focused on running. If you are ever on Mt. Lemmon, keep an eye out for Carol as she runs to the very top!

The route had a good blend of uphill climbs, rolling hills, and nice long downhills. We missed a turn and Greg and Karen ended up adding two miles to their course, for a total of 29 miles (and with an average speed of 22 mph). Rich and Marlene missed the turn as well, but got back into the race quickly and finished in 1:16:52.

Look at Karen, Greg, and Marlene, after finishing the race! They are all as fresh as daisies and ready to ride some more! Washington, here we come!
